The bad ending is actually canon, on three playthroughs I’ve only gotten it once. Please follow their rules and regulations while visiting. The morality system in the first two games is rather obscure, and playing by a guide is hardly the most enjoyable way to experience Metro. The author himself published it online at no cost.
